On the campaign trail today, we met up with Jeff (name changed), a Vietnam Vet.  Some days, door-knocking is an emotional drain, and this was one of ’em.

Jeff, a handsome guy in his 60s, came to the door several moments after we rang the bell.  When Art asked what his issues/concerns might be, Jeff choked up.  We need to do more for vets, he said.  Art then explained his record on the Veterans Affairs Committee, and the good things accomplished.  “It’s not enough,” said Jeff, “It’s not enough.”    Tears were flowing like rain drops down his cheeks as Jeff told us his physical ailments.  He’s suffering from a brain injury, PTSD and wears braces on his injured legs.  He shook Art’s hand and said he’d be voting for him, but, “get back in there and do more for us.”  Art and I had to take a few minutes in the ArtStaedMobile to recover before hitting the next door (and use the Kleenex box I keep handy for moments such as this).

And now, a shout-out for Don Tyne director of Veteran’s Affairs in Linn County.   His name pops up over and over again as we meet with veterans who have utilized Linn County’s services.  Jeff was another guy who couldn’t say enough good about Don and the help he received because of Don’s efforts.  I’m quite proud of my husband for passing legislation establishing a veterans’ trust, and legislation that ensures every Iowa county now has a trained director to directly help vets find the assistance they need.

Thank you to all who have served our country!!!
