Art and I went door knocking this evening as usual, after riding bikes with Sen. Rob Hogg on his annual Bike Across The District event.
Although we both enjoy bike riding very much, door-knocking this past year has taken precedence over fun physical activities (not that d-k isn’t fun, mind you…), and boy, are we SORE! Oh, well, it was perfect weather-wise and we had some good conversations along the way!
Earlier today, we were invited to attend the birthday party of a voter’s daughter who has Down’s Syndrome. Seeing Beth (name changed) and her many friends enjoying the delicious treats and fun games at this 50’s themed event, we felt honored and privileged to be part of the celebration.
When we owned the coffee shop, several times a year we’d have a group of mentally-challenged adults stop in as part of their weekend outing. When they first began patronizing the store, I would feel a bit overwhelmed by the group – as usually it was just mom and I working the shift. 8 drinks (some wanted tea, some lattes, some Italian sodas) and 8 sandwiches made-to-order, please. Soon, however, when I saw their mini-van pull up in front of the café, I would smile with delight. Yes, it was tricky getting everyone served quickly and efficiently, but afterward…..afterward was social time! Mom & I had more fun getting to know this bunch and never had we felt more appreciated by serving someone an egg salad sandwich! Big hearts and big smiles, as well as lots of hugs, singing & picture-taking.
Beth turned 50 this week, and I have since learned that this isn’t unusual. Down’s Syndrome babies have a life expectancy into their 60s, and they can live a full, productive life, contributing and being a wonderful part of our society. Here in Linn County, Iowa, some like Beth, are losing resources needed to make their lives’ meaningful. Mental Health Reform should not include cuts to sheltered workshops and other resources that provide for quality of life for those greatly in need of these services. This is another issue Art is passionate about addressing in the Iowa legislature. Beth and her friends deserve a stonger voice!
