Today was art day, for certain! Door-knocking with Art , we met several creative people who shared their talents with us. First, we visited with Dave (names changed), a young man who does artwork for a popular sporting logo.
He told us most of the work is done with computers now and there are tremendous time pressures, but he still enjoys the job. Dave was quite impressed to have met Art, and said he and his wife were “yes” votes!
In another apartment complex, we spoke with Theresa. When I admired the hand-made quilt block hanging outside the door, she was happy to demonstrate her current art project: tatting. She showed us the intricate lace doilies she was working on for her daughter’s antique secretary. We were really in awe of the tiny, complex stitching. Theresa’s concern was for the slowed economy and the fact that her investments had tanked and her pension doesn’t seem secure.
Later in the day, we met Jeremy, an architectural designer of “smart homes”. This is an area Art has long been interested in, and the two gentlemen had a great conversation about photovoltaic applications and wind turbines (I was slightly more engaged visiting with Theresa : ) Jeremy lost his first career after many years with the same company, and is re-inventing himself with a little help from Kirkwood Community College. He’s starting his own firm, and Kirkwood classes have given him the necessary entrepreneurial knowledge and skills.
All in all, it was a gifted group of voters we met with, and I think they’ve inspired me! I have a small room downstairs that needs painting…..
