October 26

I am tired.  Tired of door-knocking, tired of campaigning. It’s been bitterly cold the last two nights as we were out and I’m not looking forward to another evening spent shivering.

But after we got home from canvassing tonight, Art received a Thank You card in the mail from a voter he met while door-knocking four years earlier.
… It had been another chilly fall evening in 2008, and Art was making quick visits with folks as he went door-to-door.  When an elderly couple greeted him, Art quickly realized it was just as cold inside their home as out.  It didn’t take long for David and Joan (names changed) to share their story.  Their basement had flooded that summer, ruining their furnace.  On a limited income, they were unable to pay for its replacement and were unaware that FEMA might help cover the expenses.  Art explained the process and provided them with forms and information, and helped then walk through the paperwork.  Soon, the heat was on- literally!  Fortunately, David and Joan’s request for aid was processed more quickly than some, and they were able to stay warm that winter with a new furnace…
The card we received (with a note inside declaring David and Joan’s support) was an aptly timed reminder of why I’m freezing my rear off on the campaign trail. Inspired again!

We’ll be outside visiting with voters tomorrow; but this time, I’m wearing my long-johns.
