Oh dear, Rebecca, I now know how Dr. Frankenstein must have felt.
Actually, I took a rare evening off and left Art to fend for himself on the door-knocking trail. He was armed with a smile, a healthy dose of determination and a great attitude, so I know he did just fine on his own.
We had some interesting encounters the night before, however….
Juan (names changed) stepped outside on the front stoop to visit with us. This usually means one of two things- either there’s a large barking dog trying to escape, or the voter has some specific questions for Art. In this instance it was the latter. For a young man in his 20s, Juan has big aspirations of opening up a pizza café. It was obvious this wasn’t a pipe dream, as his questions and comments were insightful and well-researched. Art and I sold our café six months ago, and we were pleased to offer some nuggets of advice. (Research! Location! Experience!! Juan had the last two covered nicely and was in fact baking a pizza while he spoke to us. Pizza just happens to be one of my faves, but unfortunately all my hints of offering to test the product fell on deaf ears.) After he and Art spoke about small businesses and job creation efforts, we wished him much success and moved to the next home.
Tabitha and James were outside with their babies, 1 & 3 yrs old. Art spoke about his background in education as tiny Bridgett with a head full of dark curly locks, crawled over to me across the grass. Tabitha watched with amusement as little Bridgett grabbed my pants leg and pulled herself up to a standing position. To be greeted with such warmth, trust and huge smiles and silly giggles was even better than a bite of Juan’s pizza! It was a fun night and if the rain abates, I’ll be joining Art once again on the campaign trail this evening.
