Door knocking tonight with Art was quite a workout!  If you think Cedar Rapids is flat, just do a little walking- or biking- on the northeast side of town!  We were both a bit breathless from yet another hill, when we met Josie (names changed), sitting outside reading a book on her front porch.  She was happy to take a break from reading to share her story.

Josie has three adult kids living at home, all with severe mental and physical health issues.  She was already struggling to provide proper care for her children when  state cuts to Linn County’s  MH/DD, as well as Social Security funding at the federal level,  has left her feeling frustrated and defeated.   Josie has repeatedly contacted representatives in Iowa and in Washington, to improve the services for her children and others, but with little positive result.  She has continuously fought for increased funding for those needing MH/DD services.  Her fierce dedication to raising awareness for this cause reminded me of a mother bear protecting her cubs.   We left Josie feeling more determined than ever for Art to bring a voice to this issue and make a difference in her children’s lives.

On yet another hilly street, we met a British citizen (boy do I love that accent!) who was happy to talk politics, policies….and the Olympics!  This lovely peace-loving lady spoke to us about the prevalence of guns and violence in our society vs. her home country, as well as the impact of wars on our veterans and the cost to our countries.  Another passionate woman with several causes to trumpet who was pleased to have her voice heard.  Home at last, legs and buns sore from all that street climbing, and we’re going to watch an old Cary Grant flick and chow down on popcorn!  Gotta recharge for our journey tomorrow : )
